Person Centered Planning
What is Person Centered Planning?
The concept of Person Centered Planning serves to further The Arc's vision of self-determination for all people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Person Centered Planning is a process-oriented approach to empowering people. It focuses on the individual person and his or her needs by putting the individual in charge of defining the direction for their lives, not on the systems that may or may not be available to serve them. The goal of this method is that the process leads to greater inclusion as a valued member of the community at large.
Planners trained in Person Centered Planning help guide individuals and others who are involved in the lives of those individuals to help them focus on the individual to set specific goals and develop plans for reaching those goals. The planning team looks to identify opportunities for the individual to develop personal relationships, participate in the community, increase control over their own lives, and develop the necessary skills and abilities to achieve their goals.
